Some people consider psychological therapy because there is something getting in the way of them living their life in the way that they want. This could be fear, worry, or finding that they have to do things in a certain way, or act in line with unrelenting personal standards.
For some people, they may have experienced stresses or traumas in the past which affect the way that they feel now. For others, psychological therapy is considered when they feel stuck and want to consider how to live their most meaningful life.
In any case, talking to a psychological therapist – someone trained and experienced who is removed and separate from daily life, can help to move forwards, towards the life that they want to live, and the person that they want to be.
Psychological therapy is a form of talking treatment. As a psychologist, I am trained in a range of psychological approaches, and blend and use these as appropriate. I believe that people have an innate ability to be emotionally healthy. The experiences that we have in life, and the lessons that we learn will affect the way in which we respond and deal with challenges. Sometimes, our experiences and responses mean, that with the best will, we can find ourselves in unhelpful patterns.
Psychological therapy starts by developing an individual and personalised understanding of the factors which influence how we feel and behave in the present. This shared understanding allows us to identify ways to change, and support to develop the tools and skills to do so.
I work with adults with a range of aspirations, including managing difficulties associated with mood, anxiety, confidence and experience of trauma. My particular interests and expertise are around low mood and anxiety – including phobias, obsessive-compulsive difficulties, shyness and social anxiety, and worry. I also have a particular interest in making sense of unusual experiences (such as hearing or seeing things that other people do not or holding strong and distressing worries).
